Ok, sounds dramatic; but what I am referring to is the recent reactions to the Government after Cyclone Larry hit.
I have many elderly relatives living in the region, many I cannot contact yet, so don't think I am unaware of the gravity of the situation.
BUT, no sooner had the winds died down to a dull roar, we heard the the roar of " what's the Government doing for us!??" ......... "why aren't they here helping??" .... "where's some money ???"
I understand that 'troops' of many kinds were deployed as soon as it was possible to do so, ,as soon as it was safe to do so .
After seeing the reality for themselves, Government officials sent extra staff to distrubute food , money etc.
The reason for my title? It reeked of the responses , after a week i may add , in the USA after Katrina. People didn't want what happened there in the aftermath to happen here. I understand that . Bit I am saddened that they forgot the Queenslander way & the Aussie Spirit . "Looking after your mates" is not just a catchcry here , we mean it!! We just need a short time to get the ball rolling.
I hope I never see those scenes on Tv screens again, of people braving the worst storm they may ever see, ,something that was no-one's fault & then turning on those who come to help them. |

OK, on one hand I agree with you, on the other...
When a disaster happens overseas, our leaders are quick to stand up and very publicly offer help, financial and other. Lot of it has to do with publicity. So when we need help here, australians should expect at least the same aid as that being thrown at other countries. Don't get me wrong, I am all for helping those in need, wherever in the world they may be, but charity begins at home and all too often our government seems to forget that. Just my five cents worth..... |
